You Must Have Crystal Clear Goals…

The most common reason for people not reaching their desired destination is… they don’t really know where they’re going.

Seems kind of obvious, huh?

The truth is, if you’ve been unsuccessful at attaining and sustaining your goals, it’s because you’ve probably never actually set clear, powerful and meaningful goals.

“But isn’t wanting to lose weight a goal?”

Kind of, but not really…

It’s actually more of a wish.

If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?

Imagine you wanted to leave your house and go visit a friend in the next town and all you had was the name of the street they lived on. No house number. No cross streets. No point of reference. No signs knowing if you went too far.

You’d probably never get there. And, if you did, it would take you 100 times longer than it would have had you actually mapped it out. Most likely you’d come close (by accident), but arrive at your desired location? Nope. And think of all the wasted time and frustration.

This is exactly what happens if you don’t set clear goals.

What does a clear goal look like?

Here are examples of clear goals:

  • “I want to be a size 6 and fit into my favorite jeans.”
  • “I want to lose 10 pounds of body fat.”
  • “I want to run a mile in 8 minutes or less.”

You see how specific and measurable it needs to be? If these were your goals, you could clearly measure them at the end of each week and see your progress.

What is a SMART goal?

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-bound

We follow the SMART formula with our clients at Arena Fitness. Why? Because it clarifies and crystallizes goals, makes them specific, tangible, relevant and sets a timeline for completion.

Generality is the enemy of progress. If you want a specific result, you need to identify a specific objective and then construct a specific plan.

The “Why” behind the “What”

So, now you have a destination; a goal. Excellent. Now, the most important part of this process needs to be addressed;

WHY do you want to get there?

If the WHAT of your goal is the analytical part, then the WHY is the heart. The WHY is the fuel that drives the machine toward the destination.

Let’s say your goal is to buy a Porsche. Why do you want a Porsche? A Porsche is just a car (a great one, but a car nonetheless). Do you really want the car, or do you want the feeling that driving that car gives you?

You’re really going for the feeling, not the car. Driving that Porsche will make you feel:

  • important
  • attractive
  • powerful
  • successful
  • or whatever!

If you want to fit into size 6 jeans, or lose 10 pounds, or run an 8 minute mile, it’s not really about fitting into pants, losing weight and running fast, it’s about how accomplishing those feats will make you feel!

So, spend some time on the WHY part of this exercise:

  • WHY do you want to accomplish these goals?
  • How will it make you feel about yourself when you do?
  • How will it change your self-perception?
  • How will this achievement improve your life?

In the end, the emotional drivers, the WHYs, will propel you forward much more steadfastly than the WHATs.

Don’t shortchange this part of the exercise, it’s really important!
