Squats can be incredibly beneficial…

But only when done properly. After all, you get up and down from chairs, benches, bed, sofas, etc. all day long, so it’s important to preserve that ability. That is truly a “functional” exercise (the term “functional” has been beaten up over the last few years, but this is a good and truthful example). The best way to learn and practice your squat is by working with an expert, as our members who do personal training in Encino and Northridge do with us!

But, if you aren’t working with a personal trainer, you still need some guidance! Sarah is here to help you out! In this video, she demonstrates some fixes for a couple of common mistakes when performing the squat. The squat is complex, so this isn’t a complete step by step breakdown of the proper mechanics, but it’s a really good tutorial on improving a few common errors.

Don’t be afraid of squats! Be afraid of NOT BEING ABLE TO SQUAT! If you can’t squat because of injury, failure to train properly or allowing your body to become deconditioned through lack of training, how are you going to lower yourself to a seated position effectively and safely throughout your lifespan?

(Note: Naturally, if you are injured, get it checked out by a professional. If you are rehabilitating an injury, follow the advice of your medical team.)

Take some time to treat yourself with respect. Train your body, so that it will serve you well your whole life!
