Where do I start?

It’s difficult to know how and where to start when you want to begin a fitness program. There’s so much information out there, much of it contradictory. How do you know what steps you should take?

My recommendation; start with someone you trust.

Tafiq Akhir has been running a bootcamp in Hollywood for a long time and has a remarkable reputation within his community. He’s also a buddy of ours, so we passed the buck and asked him for his top 3 tips for someone looking to start a fitness program.

Here’s what he said:

Tip #1: Have a definitive goal

What do you hope to achieve?

What is the purpose?

Don’t be vague, really drill down into the specifics.

Be specific; do you want to lose 50 pounds? Do you want to increase your strength? Do you want to lower your cholesterol? Do you want to improve your cardiovascular endurance?

Only by being clear and specific can you choose the best coach or program to lead you to your goals.

Tip #2: Work with a fitness professional

Work with someone who is an expert in helping you get the results you’re trying to achieve. Especially if you’re a beginner! You don’t want to guess, take risks or assume anything!

Could be a personal trainer, group fitness instructor or health coach. Find the best match for you and your desired results.

If you don’t, you might injure yourself, waste time or choose a program not consistent with your desired results.

Tip #3: Fully commit

Be ALL-IN when it comes to working toward your goals.

Fully commit to the trainer or coach you’ve chosen to work with.

Fully commit to the workouts you’ve chosen.

Fully commit to your nutrition program.

Most importantly, fully commit to YOURSELF.
